Preventative Dentistry » Dental Hygiene
Your teeth will be professionally cleaned with special equipment and pastes, this process is also known as scaling and polishing. You will be advised on the best brushing technique and given tips on flossing and using interdental brushes.
Dental hygiene at the dental practice also forms part of treating gum disease and bad breath. If you have a bridge, denture, orthodontic treatment or a dental implant you will have specific hygiene needs that our dentists will be able to assist you with.
It is recommend that you come in for regular hygiene appointments to ensure your mouth stays clean and healthy.
Here at Halesowen Dental, we recommend Oral B electric toothbrushes, there are other electric toothbrushes on the market, because it oscillates, rotates and pulsates we all feel that with good instruction and guidance the patient will get the best results.
Our own studies have shown that they are twice more effective at removing plaque than manual brushing.
Our instruction includes holding the round headed brush at 45 degrees against the junction of the tooth and the gum so each tooth get the full benefit of the brush going underneath the gum line and in between the teeth as much as possible. By doing this on every individual tooth and using interdental aids i.e. interdental brushes or floss the patient is helping to keep the plaque (soft deposits) to a minimum and hopefully stopping the tartar (hard deposits) from building up again.
We spend time demonstrating one to one the technique of both electric tooth brushing and in case the charge of your electric brush runs out then manual brushing using the 45 degree round and round in small circles method, we recommend you also close your mouth half so the cheeks are soft this allows the brush head to get to the junction of the gum and tooth.
